They were often told “I’ll tell you later” or that what they were talking about “wasn’t important” or they “wouldn’t understand”. ![]() Many stories included deaf people struggling to be involved in conversations with their hearing relatives, seeing them laugh and smile, but not being able to keep up or understand. For those hearing families who don’t change their ways and learn ASL to communicate with their child, this could lead to days, months, or even years of a family struggling to communicate and bond with each other. ![]() As the family is the first community a deaf individual belongs to, being born into a hearing family that doesn’t sign can significantly affect how a deaf individual will be shaped. A quote from the movie that stuck out to me was, “Language and tongues have become synonymous, so what happens when a group of people use hands not tongue? They aren’t seen as human and are different” (Audism Unveiled). Oppression can be seen in a number of environments, but the hardest might be in one's own home. They often felt left out or disconnected. This documentary was packed full with stories of deaf individuals who struggled to communicate and establish relationships with their hearing family members. At the time of this documentary, 69% of deaf children live in a home where parents don’t sign. Deaf people have made strides with discrimination in their own families, education, and laws.įor many deaf individuals, they were born to hearing families who were part of another culture and spoke a different language. The personal accounts of those involved in this documentary are emotionally charged with frustration, sadness, anger, and hopefulness for future generations to be more understanding and educated. Can ASL survive oppressive climate? Can ASL help Illinois School for the Deaf face its brutal past? Is it possible for Illinois School for the Deaf devastated by Cued Speech to be brought back to life? And that is a force to be reckoned with in these politically oppressive times. The truth is, Deaf community in Illinois is fighting an uphill battle to save their freedom of speech: ASL. ![]() The idea of driving extreme oppression was an early warning signal that marked a new direction in Illinois Deaf community. When a Deaf person witness and ignore Audism and oppression, we let the person know that our fearless concerns to carry social responsibility and stand up against hate speech and the corrupt oppressors of bullies like hearing supremacy. It is time to uncover the corruption, back-room deals, and Oralism greed that we need to know to resist Audism and oppression. There is the language oppression pushing for the hate and opportunism wooing from Oralism and this Cued Speech practices. It is an affront to everything ASL stands for. Wrong.ĪSL means for the freedom of speech. Now, thanks to in part to oppression restricting and ASL suppression, hate speech, the lies, and distortions of Oralism ideology, combined with the matrix of oppression that has lost touch with its base, they may think they’ve achieved. Alexander Graham Bell-controlled Deaf Illinois-ideologically extremist, anti-ASL, insensitive to Deaf community, and hostage to Oralism-is a danger to their democracy.īeginning with the ISD administration, the oppressors have been focused on establishing one-language rule-their own rules or face punishment. This is not the America we know and love. And, until Audism occurred, it is not the same and no Deaf student shall never face a full-frontal attack on their most cherished democratic values: American Sign Language (ASL). Or one surrounded by so many questionable characters. Never been Cued Speech been mired in so many conflicts of interest. When a Deaf individual deny that Audism and oppression is happening at Illinois School for the Deaf that results in a failure to comprehend social responsibility to stand up against Audism. ![]()
